Indian Coast Guard Rescues Six Fishermen Off Mangaluru Coast Amid Rough Seas

MANGALURU, June 30: In a challenging search and rescue (SAR) operation carried out under severe weather conditions, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) rescued six fishermen from the distressed Indian fishing boat IFB Manju Matha off the Mangaluru coast on the night of June 29.

The distress alert was received at around 4 p.m. via VHF radio from the fishing vessel, which was located approximately 33 nautical miles off Surathkal. The vessel had suffered hull damage due to rough sea conditions, causing heavy flooding and posing an immediate threat to the lives of the six crew members on board.

Responding without delay, the Indian Coast Guard diverted ICGS Sachet to the location. Despite extremely rough seas, strong winds, poor visibility and the onset of darkness, the Coast Guard ship reached the distressed vessel within 90 minutes and launched a complex rescue operation.

Demonstrating exceptional seamanship and coordination, the rescue team deployed remote-operated lifebuoys, specially designed for operations in adverse sea conditions, to safely reach the stranded fishermen.

By 6 p.m., all six fishermen had been rescued without injuries. The operation concluded successfully at 11.30 p.m.

According to an official statement from the Indian Coast Guard, the successful mission reflects the force’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives at sea. It also highlights the courage, professionalism and operational excellence of Coast Guard personnel, supported by advanced rescue technology, in overcoming challenging maritime emergencies.

Reaffirming its motto, “Vayam Rakshamah” (We Protect), the Indian Coast Guard said it continues to maintain constant vigilance along India’s coastline and remains committed to providing timely assistance to those in distress at sea.
